No more #31 Bar soon!

The legendary “#31 Bar” will be no longer in business at the end of this month.

I learnt about this on LI Jianhong‘s blog (in Chinese), it’s very sad. I’ve been there twice, the first time was during the 2nd 2pi Festival in 2004, the second was in May 2005, when I co-curated with Li the first performance of the China Sound Unit (Dajuin Yao + WANG Changcun) in mainland China, with guest appearance of Stefanie L. KU from UCSB. Both are wonderful experiences.

Here’s what Li wrote on his blog, translated into English:

At the end of this month, there will be no more #31 Bar.
The only bar in Hangzhou dedicated to new music concerts is going to disappear.
It’s probably the bar with the highest density of performances (averagely one or two gigs per week) in the history of Hangzhou, the fact that the live music scene in Hangzhou was getting prosperous in the past 2 years should be mostly credited to #31 Bar, but now it’s going to die soon.
What’s next…hell knows…
